RE: Doom and Gloom!

It may well be that the Chinese saying "may you live in interesting times" applys to current days. It's not a "Chinese saying," .....has no origin......:)

RE: An observation of people coming and going......

I have always held the door open for men or women. Something my Dad taught me. He was quite traditional and British in his ways....not a bad way to be. I'm one of the few that still do this and I found it amusing (secretly...I smiled within, it's not polite to do otherwise, after all, is it:) ) when at my retirement party, a number of people publicly noted, that I was one of the last of the gentlemen. I guess it was all those doors I held for others throughout the years. He also taught me to get up, when a woman enters the room. I did so, till the late '60's , but that habit withered away, as others, women included, generally regarded that as an archaic form of politeness. Ahhh, is it no wonder why chivalry died? If on a crowded bus, I will offer my seat to a woman or a man that has physical challenges. As I haven't been on a bus, crowded or otherwise for about 35 years so I have not been recently tested. But in general, Mandrake, I do agree, politeness, for example holding a door for others seems to be a thing of the past. Too bad, I have always found that being polite introduces a climate of civility, of kindness to another, that benefits all of us, in our daily interaction.Yup! :)

Some us even a little under 45 still practice simple manners and respectI see it all the time here in Texas...maybe it's a southern thing. When you're that old, they may be afraid you might not be able to open it for yourself........:) :)

RE: GM in Preliminary Talks With Chrysler

It's way past time the auto industry is taken over by the government anyway, in my estimation. So you believe the government would be better at building cars than everything else they are getting involved in?Are you kidding? Of course the government can do a better job in the auto business than the greedy U.S automakers building shoddy stuff. Look at GM's stock price, they're busted. You'll love the government cars/trucks.

RE: GM in Preliminary Talks With Chrysler

What happens when two dying companies merge? Could be interesting to watch. Two funerals for the price of one. Miller and Coors are together......Budweiser and some German consortium are together, why not Ford and GM?

RE: GM in Preliminary Talks With Chrysler

I believe by this time next year the US automakers will be united under the American Domestic Automaker Group, with loans for their operation guaranteed and owned by the Federal Government. It's way past time the auto industry is taken over by the government anyway, in my estimation. GM's 0% financing, has caught-up with and cost the whole industry their way of doing business.

ROMO ESPN feedback If you ask me, Romo is the weak link again this year. He needs to be thrown under the bus.....er, RV. :) Superbowl win?? Ha-ha!! Gotta win a playoff game first. Go back to the '80s and '90s and watch your VHS tapes you recorded over Fresh Prince.

RE: Doom and Gloom!

We are at the bottom or very close to it as of today. We're not even close. Until the last remnants of greedy neo-capitalists I'm reading about are still vested and not driven out of stocks, we ain't there. Give it a while. :)

How much was the buy-in 42 years ago Joe?$19.00 a share....never split, never paid a dividend; (no tax event until you sell) if it meets my needs, which I have no doubt it will. The next generation gets the new tax-basis number at your demise. There were distinct advantages to being born and raised in Omaha, NE 40+ years ago.:)

RE: If bail out passes and works

Berkshire is too expensive for the average investor and near a 52 week low. It has also missed it's earnings estimate 2 of the last 3 quarters and is expected to miss the next quarter. The Oracle has been putting a lot of money in the market. Has he lost his touch or is the market so bad that no one can make any money? Only time will tell. Putting money in the market at this time, IMO, is not a good decision. He has said we are in a recession. Gains can be spectacular but so can losses. No dividends or splits. Berkshire is not interested in selling to the common man. Right......wait until it's at a 52 week high and buy. :S Congratulation on not buying a stock that has averaged and compounded at a 20%+ percentage rate for 42 years. Yeah, he's lost his touch with you.:S.
